Torrentis
Products
The
sport of fly-fishing and the food items fish are eating are obviously
intimately related. All the kit that Torrentis offers has just one goal. The
goal is to help anglers better understand what the fish they are trying to
catch are actually feeding on. Most anglers have frustrating stories of
occasions when fish are rising all around them yet ignoring all their favourite
patterns leaving them beaten and bemused. All this can now change; you do not
even have to be skilled in bug identification because simply by catching and
looking carefully at the food that is available to the fish you can choose,
with confidence, the artificial fly best suited to match what you see. You’ll
be amazed at what you find and a whole new world will be revealed.
Bug Skreen, intended for
the angler trying to find out what is available for the fish to feed on either
at the water surface or within the water column of both rivers and stillwaters.
In rivers hold across the flow in the area just downstream of fish activity
allowing the samples to wash onto the mesh. It can also be used to sample which
bugs are living on the riverbed or in weed. To do this just hold across the
flow in the shallows and gently disturb a small area of riverbed or weed just
upstream of the Bug Skreen, this will release bugs into the flow where they are
carried to the mesh and trapped. On stillwaters use the Bug Skreen to sweep the
downwind margins where any potential food items will collect. When not in use
the Bug Skreen simply rolls up to fit in the a pocket of your fly-fishing vest
or bag. Each net uses a soft yet tough
1mm mesh that is insect-friendly, this
ensures all captured bugs can be released without harm after visual
examination.
Approximate size when open is 300mm x 200mm
Size & Colour
Reference Cards, two tough, waterproof
laminated cards that allow you to accurately check the size and colour shades
of any insect you catch. Such important information can be used for reference
at the fly-tying bench or just general interest that all helps to a better
understanding of the bugs & beasties that make up the food chain of the
fish we are trying to catch. Most importantly, if you use the cards in
conjunction with a Bug Observation Box
it is much easier to examine your captive which can then be released without
harm and you can get on with some fishing!
Approximate
size of each card is 100mm x 70mm
Bug Observation
Box, a very useful, light weight clear acrylic
observation box. This is perfect for holding any small bug of interest while
you examine it. You can then either match it with an artificial from your fly
box or make notes on its size and colour or even check its identity with the
aid of one of the Field Studies Council
Guides (see below). Best of all,
the creature can then be released
without harm and the box put back in your vest pocket until it is needed again.
Approximate size is 55mm x 35mm x 20mm
Field Studies
Council (FSC) Guides, When it comes to
basic identification by the water side there is no better system than to use FSC
guides. I stock five of the most useful for the practical fly-fisher but new
ones are always coming out, so watch this space! The two most useful guides I
find are the Freshwater Name Trail
and Bugs on Bushes. With these two
Guides you can narrow down to “type”
just about any bug or beastie that you find in and around the water that could
be a food source for the fish. Both these guides are easy to use folding charts
that are laminated (making them ideal for use by the waterside) and can easily
be carried all the time in your fly-vest or fishing bag. They are highly
recommended. If you want to go a little deeper into the wonderful world of
insects and identification then you can take the next step by looking at the
more specialised guides from the FSC. There is one for Stoneflies, one for
Caddisfly Larvae, and one for Adult Caddisflies (the one for upwinged flies is
due out sometime in 2010 or maybe 2011). These are a natural next step from
Freshwater Name Trail and Bugs on Bushes and you will be amazed how quickly you
will learn.

The Endosampler, this confirms what the fish are feeding on.
It is not a traditional stomach pump! It has the very minimum of suction and a
small diameter soft tube, that when used correctly, takes just a small sample
of the fishes most recently eaten food items (this is what you want to see).
Each sampler comes with clear instructions on how, and when, it should be
used.
Approximate size is 160mm long with a 15mm
wide bulb
Sample Tubes,
fly-fishermen who tie their own flies or who have a keen interest in the
entomology side of the sport occasionally like to take away examples of the
bugs they find. These can be studied in far greater detail at home and stored
for future reference as part of a collection. These tubes come in a packet of
two; they are very tough, leak resistant, and ideal for transporting samples
from the river or inside a fish. The specimens can be either kept dry (the
adult insects) in the tubes or in water (the larvae and nymphs) and should be
okay for a few hours. However, as soon as you get home the specimens need to be
dealt with before they start to rot! They will easily fit into a spare pocket
of your fly-vest.
Each
Tube is about 120mm long and 18mm wide (15ml capacity)
